Oh my! The 2h tour was fabulous! We felt extremely lucky as Mo took the time to explain everything and answer numerous questions. The beauty and sheer size of these lava tubes is astounding. Definitely a highlight of our 5-week long stay on Big Island.
We booked the lighted tour last minute and it was well worth it! Our tour guide Brian was extremely knowledgeable and passionate. He made sure we had all of our questions asked and was a great photographer. We're so happy we made it a point to come. Definitely a must. The lighted tour is perfect for little ones as our 5 year old had a blast. Thanks again!
The tour with Mo was amazing! He gave us an in-depth understanding of the vulcanology of Hawai’i both before and during our time inside the lava tube. He is very knowledgeable and funny! This is a great stop to pair with a trip to South Point. Be sure to call and reserve in advance.
Highly recommend. One of the highlights of our trip. Mo was the best guide we’ve encountered on all our travels. As he lives on the land, he learns from the researchers who study the area and has a wealth of archaeological and geological knowledge to share. Soon he will learn from microbiologists as well. We learned a lot about the formation of the tubes and Hawaiian islands. He’s also hilariously entertaining and the tour was well paced. It’s not just a tour though as there is plenty of adventure and exploring if you are interested. We did the 2 hour tour which included going through the intricate maze of lava tubes and descending ~100 feet into the cave with flashlights and helmets with a very short 2 minute section crawling - a brief intro into the thrill of what cavers may experience. You can tell that the people here care deeply about preservation of the lava tubes and proceeds go towards this cause as well. Mo is a volunteer guide and clearly passionate about what he does. We feel very lucky to have stumbled on this experience and to have met Mo!
A fantastic first stop on our Big Island adventure. Learning the history as well as some of the science of lava tubes and the land formation helped us appreciate the wonders of Volcano National Park and the island as a whole. We very much recommend Kula Kai Caves to all visitors. The basic 2 hour tour was appropriate for a group with young kids, as it was extremely educational, well lit, and not physical. We very much appreciated our guide Moe, his stories of the local community and caverns made for an enjoyable 2 hours. Thank you.
The was an exceptional tour and very informative. We learned a lot about the formation of the caves and the volunteer also told us a lot about the Polynesian explorers who used the caverns for shelter on their way up the mountain. It was both a cultural and geological exploration. The kids had a great time. Highly recommended! Make sure you call in advance as the tours are run by volunteers and it is in a gated community. The entire community is working to preserve the caverns for scientists and future generations. We did the 1 hour “lighted cave” tour (allow at least 2 hours for orientation and questions), the two hour tour would include more information about the artifacts found in the cave.
We were lucky enough to book this last minute. The tour with Mo was fantastic! Mo is enthusiastic, personable, and well-informed. He was also very patient and took his time explaining things and sharing his knowledge. The lava tubes themselves were astonishing. This would be a tour to repeat as there is much to see, learn, and think about.
Did the extended tour which is well worth it! Brian was our guide and he's hilarious and passionate about caving. He was very knowledgeable and eager to answer any and all questions. You will see some interesting things but more importantly learn a lot!!
